Tuesday April 3, 2012

We were awakened early with a clap of thunder at around 5:30 am which was followed by a simultaneous flash and bang. This continued until around 7:30 am at which time we got up for coffee. We checked the weather and things did not look good for our planned bike ride on the Timpoochee Trail.

Breakfast was served at 9:00 am and it was fantastic .... no need for lunch today!

The rain continued for the morning and finally started to let up at around 10:30. We decided to go and see one of the local free attractions which was the US Air Force Armament Museum, part of Eglin AFB.

They had an excellent static display of aircraft dating from the early 2000's back to WWII and a museum of weaponry from the same period. Here are a few samples ....

This is Chris with the MOAB - Massive Ordinance Air Blast bomb .... aka the Mother Of All Bombs - 18,700 lb of H6 explosive.

It looked like the weather was starting to clear a little bit so we headed to the start of the Timpoochee Trail, just west of Grayton Beach. It took us about an hour to travel the 20 miles due to heavy traffic in the Destin Beach area.

Apparently it is still spring break and the roads were just packed. It was still sprinkling when we arrived with some offshore weather moving in so we decided to wait rather than fight the traffic to return to the B&B.

Around 2:30 it looked like we may have a bit of a weather window so we struck out on a 25km ride to Seaside and back. We would have gone farther except it was so congested in Seaside with Spring Break youth that we could barely get down the trail on our bikes. We were never that obnoxious when we were that age, were we?

The bike trail followed Hwy 30A and afforded a good overview of the area and some of the coastal dune lakes.

We got back to the B&B in time for a glass of wine the we went out for some Italian food. It was entertaining because it was their cooking school night and we could watch the participants on the video monitors in the restaurant. It looked like the cooking involved more wine drinking than cooking.
